The Spark Program

UB’s Fellowship and Scholarship Initiative

Spark is a fellowship and scholarship development program for select students.  This program provides students with information about nationally and internationally competitive fellowships and scholarships and how to develop a competitive profile. Careful planning and preparation is needed to be competitive for these awards.

Presenters include UB’s current and past fellowship winners and key faculty on campus. The program is held in the spring for freshmen and in the fall for select sophomores.  Students must apply to the program and have to go through a selection process.  Typically students have GPA’s of 3.5 or higher and have already made a positive impression on faculty and staff.

The program meets over the course of seven weeks for dinner and introduces students to opportunities both at the undergraduate and graduate levels.  Throughout the program participants are introduced to students who have applied for and won these national awards. It is designed to give students the opportunity to assess their strengths, envision their future and create a plan to become competitive for these major fellowships and scholarships.

The fellowships and scholarships discussed do not cover the expenses of medical school, dental school or pharmacy. The Spark Program is not the best fit for students who plan on pursuing these career paths. Additionally, all of the competitive awards covered in the program are only available to US Citizens.

The spring freshmen program will be held on Tuesday evenings from 5:00pm to 6:30pm. Students must commit to participating in the entire series of workshops. Students will complete StrengthsQuest, learn about personal statement writing and participate in a creative problem solving workshop. Students will also meet individually with either Elizabeth Colucci or Megan Stewart as part of the program. You are encouraged to complete an application for a summer program or research opportunity.

Freshmen interested in applying for SPARK can complete the online application here: The application is due by 5pm EST on Friday, January 27, 2017.
